An extension moves a package's expiry date without touching its credits. Use it for goodwill, for a delay that was the academy's fault, or for a family who ran out of time by a few days.

If the family was away for a defined period, freeze is the better tool — it extends by exactly the days missed and frees their seat while they are gone.
